Starting from November 1st, 2025, oxygen concentrators will officially be included in the benefits covered by the General Healthcare System (GHS) in Cyprus.
The decision by the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) brings significant relief to patients who require continuous oxygen therapy at home and allows them to obtain the device with full coverage through the GHS.
An oxygen concentrator is a medical device that draws in ambient air, filters out nitrogen, and delivers oxygen with a purity level of up to 96%. It is a safe and efficient solution that provides a continuous oxygen supply without the need for cylinders or refills. The device operates electrically and is ideal for home therapy.
Eligible beneficiaries include patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, cardiopulmonary diseases, or other conditions that require long-term oxygen therapy at home.
The prescription is not issued electronically within the GHS system but through a written medical certificate. The attending physician, either a pulmonologist or a cardiologist issues an official form indicating the patient’s medical condition and the duration of the therapy.
The prescription can cover a period of one month, three months, six months, or one year, depending on the clinical indication.
The beneficiary receives the medical certificate from the attending doctor and presents it to a company of their choice from the list of approved GHS providers. The device is then collected or installed according to the duration specified by the physician.
If the patient wishes, the company can deliver and install the oxygen concentrator directly at their home for an optional service fee, which is not covered by the GHS and varies depending on the location and installation service.
Under the terms of the program, the beneficiary must pay a refundable deposit of one hundred (100) euros, serving as a security for the proper use and maintenance of the device. This amount is fully refunded once the oxygen concentrator is returned in good and safe condition at the end of the treatment period.
